Coach Pruden pleased with tournament win

The Concordia Stingers women's basketball team went undefeated in three games to win the 45th annual Waterloo Naismith Invitational Tournament last weekend.

"I'm pleased with the results but there is a lot of room for improvement,” said head coach Keith Pruden of the preseason effort.

The Stingers defeated the Waterloo Warriors 74-51 and the Cape Breton Capers 73-66 last Friday and Saturday, respectively.

In Sunday morning's final, despite some inconsistent play and a strong performance from the Northern British Columbia Timberwolves, Concordia toughed out a 66-52 win.

In what Pruden describes as “a bold bid to set the record for most three-pointers missed in a CIS tournament,” Concordia attempted 88 threes over the course of the weekend with 43 attempts in Sunday's final.

Third-year guard Kaylah Barrett was named to the tournament all-star and rookie forward Richelle Grégoire was named MVP. She averaged 17.3 points per game.

Stingers fans will have a chance to see the 2012 team on Sunday, Nov. 4 when Concordia hosts the Laurentian Voyageurs in preseason action. Tipoff is 1 p.m.
