Farella fêted as women's rugby honours announced

Bianca Farella, a first-year centre from Montreal, was named the RSEQ Rookie of the Year in women’s rugby and was one of three Concordia Stingers named to the conference all-star team announced late yesterday.

With 12 tries in six games, Farella scored the most tries in the Quebec conference this season.

“She’s very dynamic going forward with the ball,” said Concordia head coach Graeme McGravie. “She’s a very powerful runner. She does not miss a tackle and her kicking is getting better. She is a very special player.”

Farella is a member of the senior women’s national team and will travel to Dubai in November to represent Canada at the International Rugby Board Women’s Sevens World Series.

Erika Ikonomopoulos, a second-year prop from Laval, Que., was also on the honour roll. She scored six tries in six games and was dominant at her position.

Rounding out the Concordia all-stars is Samantha Ewing, a second-year player from West Bolton, Que. She scored two tries in seven games this season.

The Stingers are in Quebec City on Saturday to play the Laval Rouge et Or in the conference championship. Game time is 1 p.m. The winner advances to the CIS national championship at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S. next week.
