Stinger cagers ground No. 5-ranked Ravens

The Concordia Stingers made a late charge to upend the No. 5-ranked Carleton Ravens 60-57 in the first day of action at the annual Concordia-Reebok Women’s Basketball Tournament on Friday.

The Stingers trailed 50-41 after three quarters but battled back, outscoring the Lancers 19-7 in the final frame.

Concordia all-Canadian forward Kaylah Barrett had an exceptional performance. She led all scorers in the game with 19 points, including six in the final quarter.

Rookie forward Marilyse Roy-Viau was also a big part of the Stingers’ success. She had 15 points and eight rebounds. She was good on 11 of 12 free throws, including two in the last minute that sealed the victory.

The top scorers for Carleton were Alyson Bush, Lindsay Shotbolt and Elizabeth Roach with nine points each.

Although Concordia is in first place in the Quebec conference with a 4-1 win-loss record, the team is not ranked in the national Top 10.

The CIS’s No. 1-ranked team, the Windsor Lancers, defeated the McGill Martlets 63-49 in the other game. The scrappy Martlets pushed the Lancers hard before succumbing. The score was just 27-26 for Windsor at halftime.

Tomorrow McGill will meet Carleton at 6 p.m., while Concordia takes on Windsor at 8 p.m.
