Women's basketball locks up home playoff game

Rookie forward Marilyse Roy-Viau scored 22 points and hauled in 10 rebounds to lead the Concordia Stingers to an impressive 81-58 win over the UQAM Citadins in RSEQ women’s basketball action tonight.

Roy-Viau played 33 minutes despite wearing a cumbersome protective mask to help deal with a broken nose.

“Marilyse was a real spark for us tonight,” Pruden said. “She creates so much for us offensively. She still has so much undeveloped potential. All our rookies do.”

Centre Tina Mpondani was also a key contributor. She had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Veteran guard Ashley Clarke chipped in with 16 points.

The victory guarantees Concordia will finish in one of the top two spots in the Quebec league standings and host a conference semifinal game on Feb. 27.

“I’m pleased with the effort tonight,” said Stinger head coach Keith Pruden. “We played great defence and we were much more efficient on offence. This is the kind of performance we want heading into the playoffs.”

Concordia’s win-loss record is now 10-4 with two games left to play in the regular season. The Stingers will challenge the 10-3 McGill Martlets for first place in Quebec.

Concordia is back in action next Thursday at 6 p.m. when the Bishop’s Gaiters will be the visitors.
