Hughanna Gaw of the women's rugby team and Joey Fulginiti of the men’s rugby team have been named the PJ’s Pub Concordia Stingers athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 22.
Gaw, a fourth-year No. 8, was exceptional in two victories last week. She helped the Stingers defeat the No. 7-ranked McGill Martlets 17-15 last Wednesday to win the Kelly-Anne Drummond Cup. Gaw led the team in tackles and was there in support for two tries against McGill. She was also a key contributor in Concordia’s 27-15 victory over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or on Sunday when she scored one try and setup two others.
A 25-year-old native of Elgin, Que., Gaw is currently enrolled in Leisure Sciences at Concordia.
Fulginiti, a third-year flyhalf, was outstanding in Concordia’s tough 35-28 loss to the McGill Redmen on Saturday. He singlehandedly accounted for 23 of the 28 points scored by the Stingers in the game; with two tries, two converts and three penalty goals. He played an extremely strong game for the majority of the match back at fullback, shutting down the McGill attack and keeping the game close. He then stepped into the scrumhalf position for the last quarter of the game and spearheaded a late comeback that brought the Stingers to within two points with less than a minute to go.
The 22-year-old student from Montreal studies in the Finance program at Concordia.
