Lots of silverware for women's rugby team

The Concordia Stingers women’s rugby team had two major award winners and six all-stars when the RSEQ released its honour roll on Tuesday.

Alexandra Tessier, a centre from Ste. Clothilde de Horton, Que., was named the RSEQ Rookie of the Year. In seven games, she scored six tries and was named the MVP on two occasions. The Actuarial Math student will also suit up for the Stingers women’s basketball team this winter.

Graeme McGravie was named the RSEQ Coach of the Year for the third time since he took over the team in 2005. He has brought the Stingers to the women’s playoffs for nine consecutive seasons. Concordia earned berths in the Quebec conference championship in seven consecutive seasons, winning in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012.

This year, McGravie has guided the Stingers to a perfect 7-0 win-loss record in the regular season and a 38-3 victory over the Laval Rouge et Or in semifinal action last week. Concordia will host the McGill Martlets in the conference final on Friday at 7 p.m.

Six of the 15 RSEQ all-star spots went to members of the Stingers:

Sarah Scanlon, 5th-year prop, St. Bruno, Que.

Solange Deblois, 4th-year prop, Montreal

Sammy Ewing, 3rd-year lock, West Bolton, Que.

Hughanna Gaw, 4th-year No. 8, Elgin, Que.

Samantha Bennett, 2nd-year scrum half, Ottawa

Alex Ste Marie, 1st-year winger, Pointe Claire, Que.
