Flawless Stingers win ADIDAS basketball tournament

The Concordia Stingers women’s team played exceptional basketball, rolling three quality opponents, to win the annual ADIDAS tournament at Concordia gym over the holiday break.

The No. 8-ranked Stingers defeated the No. 9-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 59-47 on Dec. 28. A key win that will help with the CIS Top 10 rankings and wildcard consideration for nationals in March.

Two-time all-Canadian Kaylah Barrett led the charge for the Stingers. She was the leading scorer in the game with 14 points. Third-year forward Serginha Estimé scored 11 points and hauled in 11 rebounds.

The following day, Concordia bounced the Queen’s Gaels 86-34. It was an exceptionally rewarding victory as the Stingers suffered a 15-point loss at the hands of the Gaels in early October. Veteran guard Ashley Clarke led the scoring with 24 points. Barrett chipped in with 21 points.

On Dec. 30, the Stingers beat the feisty Memorial Sea-Hawks 63-51 to finish the three-day, nine-game tournament as the only undefeated team. Barrett had 16 points and Estimé was good for 12 points in the victory.

Barrett was named MVP of the tournament. Clarke was named to the all-star team along with Jenny Wright of Queen’s, Sandra Amoah of Memorial and Whitney Ellenor of Laurier.
