The No. 8-ranked Concordia Stingers women’s basketball team upset the No. 6-ranked undefeated McGill Martlets 63-53 last night at the Concordia gym.
McGill had a perfect 6-0 win-loss record in Quebec conference play heading into the match. While the Martlets’ record falls to 6-1, the Stingers are now 6-3 in the RSEQ.
Concordia all-Canadian guard Kaylah Barrett led all scorers in the game with 18 points, while second-year forward Richelle Gregoire chipped in with 12 points.
Aggressive defence was a big factor for the Stingers. They forced 30 turnovers and nabbed 17 steals.
It was the second time Concordia beat a CIS Top 10 team in recent weeks. The Stingers also downed the No. 9-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Dec. 28 in tournament play.
Concordia and McGill will meet again on Saturday at the Martlets’ gym. Tipoff is 6 p.m. The event will be a Shoot for the Cure fundraiser in aid of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.
