The Concordia Stingers women's rugby team opened the 2006 season with an explosive 88-0 win over the Sherbrooke Vert et Or before 150 enthusiastic fans on Sunday afternoon at Concordia Stadium.
Concordia head coach Graeme McGravie says, "I'm happy. Last year we went down to Sherbrooke and dominated them but won only 3-0. I wasn't expecting this. Yeah, I'm happy."
The Stingers have a young team this year with 14 first-year players. The leadership from the veterans and the poise of the rookies were evident during the game.
Scoring for the Stingers were Melanie Tranchemontagne and Virginia Klinkhoff with three tries each. Robin Hunter and Sara Scalia had two tries. Singles came from Ali Olshefsky, Larissa Andrusyshyn, Sydney Theriault and Victoria Horne. Patricia Lapierre connected on four converts, while Jennifer Rosenbaum kicked three.
Coach McGravie and the team travel to Ste. Foy, Que. to meet the Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday at 4 p.m. This is a game the coach says is pivotal if the Stingers hope to improve on last season's 3-3 win-loss record.
