Wrestler Zilberman fifth at worlds

David Zilberman, Concordia's 2006 Male Athlete of the Year, was Canada's top men's performer at the Senior World Wrestling Championships held in Guangzhou, China last week.

Wrestling in the 96 kg. weight class, Zilberman finished fifth and showed great promise at his first world championship. He was eliminated from the medal rounds when he lost a close match to Cuba's Michel Batista.

In 2005, the top finish by a member of the Canadian men's team was eighth.

Zilberman, a Montreal native, is a fourth-year Leisure Sciences student.

Also at the championship, Martine Dugrenier, a Concordia alumnus who studied Exercise Science and Sports Administration, won a silver medal at 67 kg.

The native of Laval, Que. defeated Voleriya Zlatova of the Ukraine, Eri Sakamoto of Japan and Diana Mudrag of Romania before losing the gold medal match to Rue Xui Jing of China.

Japan won the women's competition followed by China and Canada, respectively.

The Canadian men's team finished 14th out of 55 competing nations. Russia, Iran and the United States were the top three finishers.
