The Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team scored big with a 2-1 victory over the No. 8-ranked UQTR Patriotes at the Colisée de Trois-Rivières on Wednesday night.
Trailing 1-0 in the third period, the Stingers turned things around with goals from Dmitri Toupikov at 11:45 and Jason Beliveau at 16:04.
Thiery Poudrier scored the lone goal at 9:21 of the second period in a losing cause for the Patriotes.
Stinger rookie goaltender Sheldon Baerg picked up his second straight win. He faced 37 shots, while his counterpart Dany Dallaire turned away 16 of 18 Concordia shots. Baerg was also in nets last Saturday when the Stingers defeated the Queen’s Golden Gaels 2-1.
The win comes at a pivotal time as Concordia battles for a playoff spot. With two games left in the season, coach Kevin Figsby's team has 19 points in the standings. The Queen's Golden Gaels have 18 points and the RMC Paladins have 17 points. When the season ends on Sunday, only two of the three teams will have a playoff berth.
The Stingers will look to stretch their advantage over Queen’s and RMC at the 20th annual Corey Cup game Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Loyola’s Ed Meagher Arena versus the McGill Redmen.
Since 1988 Concordia has faced off annually for the prestigious Corey Cup, emblematic of men’s university hockey supremacy in Montreal. The Corey Cup was dedicated in 1988 by Ronald Corey, then president and governor of the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadiens.
The Stingers wrap up the regular season versus the Ottawa-Gee-Gees on Sunday at 3 p.m. The game will also be at home on the Loyola campus.
