Head coach Marc-André Elément is pleased to announce Phélix Martineau has been named the captain of the 2021-22 Concordia Stingers men's hockey team.
“We have a long history of exceptional leadership in our program and Phélix shares many qualities with our former captains,” said Elément. “He is well-respected, he has a lot of high level hockey experience and he is a strong student. He brings a lot to our program.”
Martineau played four seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and was the team captain in 2017-18. He had 90 goals and 91 assists in 260 junior games. He went on to play professional hockey with the Fort Wayne Komets in the East Coast Hockey League and with the Montreal Canadiens’ farm team, the Laval Rocket of the American Hockey League.
Martineau sat out the 2019-20 season to satisfy U Sports eligibility requirements. He went through the 2020-21 season with the Stingers, although COVID-19 safety requirements meant there were no games. However, he was able to focus on his studies in the Gina Cody School of Engineering.
The leadership role was officially passed to Martineau by the 2020-21 captain Philippe Sanche at a golf event last week.
Former captains Olivier Hinse and Phil Hudon were also on hand to offer their support. Of course, coach Elément was the captain of the Stingers in 2010-11.
Elément also revealed that Chase Harwell, Tyler Hylland and Bradley Lalonde will be the assistant captains.
