Cory McGillis makes mark in debut

Cory McGillis, a hard-nosed left wing, joined the Concordia Stingers men’s hockey program last week and scored two goals in his debut - a 5-0 victory over the visiting York Lions on Saturday.

McGillis, 20, comes to Concordia after five years in the OHL, primarily with the Barrie Colts and the Windsor Spitfires, who selected him in the first round of the 2004 OHL draft. His last team was the Sudbury Wolves. He played 11 games in Sudbury, near his hometown of Coniston, Ont.

In his major junior career, the six-foot-two, 220-pound winger collected 53 goals and 59 assists for 112 points in 219 games. He also had 423 minutes in penalties.

Concordia head coach Kevin Figsby was expecting McGillis to join the team in September 2009 but was pleased to get a phone call from him in December.

“It was a welcome surprise,” said Figsby of McGillis’s desire to join the Stingers mid-season. “He’s definitely going to add another element to our offence and he will enhance our power play. He’s an explosive player and very skilled with the puck.”

McGillis, who is studying Economics, joins his older brother Brock at Concordia. The senior McGillis is a goaltender with the Stingers.

McGillis will be in the lineup when Concordia travels across town to play the McGill Redmen on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
