The Swedish Junior National Team showed no mercy in an exhibition game with the Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team at the Ed Meagher Arena in Montreal on Thursday night.
Led by Jakob Silfverberg’s goal and three assists, the visitors defeated the Concordia Stingers 8-2. The six-foot-one, 190-pound centre was the Ottawa Senators second pick, 39th overall, in the 2009 NHL draft.
Carl Klingberg chipped in with two goals. Anton Rödin, Adam Larson, Andre Petersson, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Marcus Kruger had singles.
Sweden outshot the Stingers 74-13.
The visitors had a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes and a 3-1 advantage after two periods. In the final frame, Sweden collected five goals to the Stingers’ one.
Both Concordia goals were scored by veteran centre Marc-André Rizk. Goaltender Maxime Joyal also stood out for the Stingers. In 30 minutes of play he stopped 36 of 39 shots.
The Swedish Junior team was in Montreal for a week-long training session in preparation for the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Regina and Saskatoon.
The Swedes have a day off to explore Montreal before leaving for home on Saturday.
