Head coach Kevin Figsby is pleased to announce goaltender Nick Champion has committed to the Concordia men’s hockey program and will suit up for the Stingers in 2011-’12.
A native of Labrador City, Nfld., Champion played four years in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, including the 2010-’11 season with the Lewiston MAINEiacs. With them he played 44 games, posting a 27-11-4 win-loss-tie record and a 2.83 goals-against average.
He led Lewiston to the league finals where the MAINEiacs eventually bowed out to the Saint John Sea Dogs who went on to win the Memorial Cup.
“We’re very excited about Nick joining the Stingers,” Figsby said. “He’s very mature, experienced and poised. He’s an extremely athletic and mobile goaltender. He will play a pivotal role in the success of the Stingers this year.”
Over the course of his junior career, Champion attracted the attention of the professional teams. He participated in the Montreal Canadiens’ rookie camp in 2010 where he played well enough to earn an invitation to the Habs’ main camp.
Figsby and the Stingers open training camp on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The first opportunity to see the new edition of the team is Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. when Concordia hosts the UQTR Patriotes in exhibition action.
