The Concordia Stingers defeated the No. 2-ranked McGill Redmen 3-2 in overtime in men’s hockey action yesterday, ending a 10-game losing streak versus their cross-town rivals.
Second-year centre Alexis Piette scored on a pass from defenceman Kiefer Orsini at 2:27 of the overtime period to deliver the win.
The Redmen opened the scoring on a power-play goal from Christophe Poirier at 1:45 of the first period. Concordia’s Kyle Armstrong answered back at 6:42. The score was 1-1 after the first period.
George Lovatsis’s goal at 19:47 of the second period gave the Stingers a 2-1 edge after 40 minutes. McGill tied the game on a goal from Marc-Olivier Vachon four minutes into the final period.
Both goaltenders posted good numbers as Concordia’s Nicholas Champion made 31 saves on 33 shots. In four games this season, he has a goals-against average of 2.67 and a save percentage of .930. McGill’s Mark Segal turned away 34 of 37 shots.
The Stingers picked up three of a possible four points on the week. They lost 3-2 in overtime to the always tough UQTR Patriotes last Wednesday.
The last time the Stingers had a win against the Redmen was Oct. 10, 2008. It was a 2-1 road victory.
The teams will meet again this Friday at 7 p.m. at McGill’s McConnell Arena.
