Lovatsis hits milestone with 50 career goals

Concordia Stingers captain George Lovatsis enjoyed a great weekend, picking up five points, including his 50th career goal in OUA regular season play as a member of men’s hockey team.

The milestone came in last Saturday’s 5-2 victory over the Nipissing Lakers at the Ed Meagher Arena. He scored the Stingers’ first goal at 11:53 of the second period. Lovatsis also assisted on two more goals.

The previous night he collected a goal and an assist in a 5-1 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs.

“When George came in January of 2010, he need time to adjust from the OHL to CIS hockey,” explains Concordia head coach Kevin Figsby. “He only scored one goal his first semester. In his third year he was one of the top scorers in the country and now he’s reached the 50-goal mark. It’s been amazing to watch his progress.

“He’s a fifth-year guy and the team captain. He’s the first on the ice and the last off.”

The veteran centre from Markham, Ont. has seven goals and nine assists for 16 points in 15 games this season. Lovatsis can add to those totals this weekend when the Stingers host the Carleton Ravens on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the Queen’s Gaels on Saturday at 2 p.m.
