The first Concordia University men's hockey team still stands as the best in the 30-year history of the institution.

Ranked No. 1 nationally for 21 weeks of their inaugural season, head coach Paul Arsenault's multi-talented Stingers posted a 43-3-1 overall record. The impressive run includes a 36-game undefeated streak, and 19-0-1 record and first place in the Quebec university conference.

"The greatest thing we accomplished this year was making a name for Concordia in the first year of its existence," Arsenault was quoted as saying in reference to the merger of Sir George Williams and Loyola. "We started a tradition and unified the school."

Montreal Gazette columnist Tim Burke wrote of the superb combination of the cocky flair of the Loyola predecessors and the sweat-hog digging of the old Sir George WIlliams teams. He added the team was a high-powered, hard-checking bunch that has size to go along with its traditionally sharp marksmanship.

After their romp through their Quebec competition, the Stingers won the Eastern Canada title with a 5-3 victory over St. Francis Xavier. At the national championship, Concordia suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 overtime loss in the semifinals to the Toronto Varsity Blues, ending their record-setting season.

The tough loss didn't diminish the journey that saw the Stingers set five team records, put five members among the top 10 all-time Concordia scorers, earn three all-Canadian honors, earn five first team QUAA all-stars and win four out of five tournament titles. In addition, two members of the team won national awards. Goaltender Jim Corsi was named the outstanding player in the CIAU and Paul Arsenault was named Coach of the Year.
