Jaleel Webb leads Stingers to tournament title

Jaleel Webb scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Stingers to an 82-70 victory over the UPEI Panthers in the championship game of the 50th annual Concordia Classic men’s basketball tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Webb, a second-year guard from Pierrefonds, Que., was named to the all-star team and was also the tournament MVP. He picked up 10 points and four rebounds in an 82-57 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs last Thursday and 11 points and seven rebounds in the 79-60 victory over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday.

Also named to the all-star team was second-year forward Ken Beaulieu of Longueuil, Que.

The last time the Stingers won their own tournament was in 2010 when they defeated New York Institute of Technology 73-72.

With rookie head coach Rastko Popovic on the bench, the Stingers have rolled up a 4-0 win-loss record in CIS preseason action.

The Stingers travel to tournaments at University of Saskatchewan and Brock University over the next couple of weeks. They return home to face the UQAM Citadins in their RSEQ home opener on Nov. 7 at 8 p.m.
