Cagers advance to Quebec championship

All-star point guard Damian Buckley scored 36 points to lead the No. 2-ranked Concordia Stingers to an 84-75 victory over the UQAM Citadins in a QSSF semifinal game before a packed gym at Concordia on Thursday night.

Buckley was eight of 12 from the field and an amazing 19 of 22 from the free-throw line.

Also chipping in was fifth-year veteran Patrick Perrotte with 17 points. Dwayne Buckley, the defensive player of the year, had 10 rebounds and three steals.

The top scorer for UQAM was Marc-Olivier Beauchamp with 22 points.

The Stingers enjoyed the victory, which helps erase the memory of the 2006 playoffs when the Citadins devastated Concordia in the semifinals by a 102-90 score. The Stingers were eliminated while UQAM reached the national championship tournament in Halifax.

Concordia will host the Laval Rouge et Or in the Quebec championship on Friday, March 9 at 7 p.m. The second-place Rouge et Or defeated the third-place McGill Redmen 83-69 on Thursday.

Tickets are now on sale for the Quebec conference championship game with VISA and MasterCard at (514) 848-2424, ext. 3898.
