Stingers get No. 1 seed at Final 8

The Concordia Stingers will be seeded first when the action starts at the 2007 CIS men's basketball championships in Halifax on Friday.

As the No. 1 team in the Final 8 the Stingers will meet the Saint Mary’s Huskies who are Atlantic University Sport conference finalists and have been given the eighth and last spot in the draw. Tip off is 1 p.m. Atlantic time.

Saint Mary’s finished the regular season with an 11-9 win-loss record and unranked in the CIS top 10. In the AUS semifinals the Huskies upset the first-place Cape Breton Capers 66-62 before losing to the Acadia Axemen 74-72 in overtime in the Atlantic championship.

The Stingers enter the tournament as the Quebec champions having scored a convincing 84-57 victory over the Laval Rouge et Or before a capacity crowd at Concordia University last Friday night.

Concordia and Saint Mary’s have met three times in the last five years, with the Stingers winning all three games. The most recent meeting was at the Rod Shoveller Memorial Tournament in Halifax on Dec. 31, 2005. Concordia won 91-64.
