The Concordia Stingers men’s basketball team capped off a whirlwind few days with an 85-70 loss to the visiting Virginia Cavaliers in exhibition play Saturday afternoon in Montreal.
Fifth-year guard Levi Vann sunk five of 10 shots from three-point range to lead the Stingers in scoring with 15 points. Decee Krah and all-Canadian Damian Buckley chipped in with 12 points each. The latter brought the crowd to its feet with a wild backwards three-point basket from centre court.
Veteran centre Jamal Gallier was Concordia’s leading rebounder with 10.
The top scorer in the game was Virginia rookie Sylven Landesberg with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Cavaliers’ James Scott added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Stinger head coach John Dore brought his veterans and a few recruits together last Wednesday for the first time this season. They trained twice a day in preparation for Virginia, a perennial Top 25 team in the NCAA.
Concordia now has six weeks to get ready for its extensive non-conference schedule that begins with the annual Concordia-Nike tournament Oct. 10-11. Open tryouts and training camp begin this Tuesday – the first day of classes.
