Cagers wrap up first half with sweep

The Concordia Stingers men’s basketball team swept the Bishop’s Gaiters on the weekend, tightening its grip on first place in the Quebec university conference.

As the teams break for exams and holidays, the Stingers have a 4-2 win-loss record in league play and are ranked No. 8 in the country.

A couple of wins over Bishop’s helped propel Concordia to the top of the standings.

Seven Stingers put up double figures as Concordia defeated the Gaiters 102-61 at Concordia gym in Montreal last Friday night.

Stingers first-year guard Hamza Ruhezamhigo led all scorers in the game with 19 points and five rebounds. He was impressive, hitting five of nine three-point shots.

Rounding out the scoring for Concordia were: James Clark, 15 points; Damian Buckley, 14 points; Dwayne Buckley, 13 points; Evens Laroche, 12 points; Decee Krah, 11 points, and Pierre Thompson, 10 points.

All-Canadian guard Damian Buckley led the charge the following night in Lennoxville, Que. He collected 25 points and six rebounds in a 59-51 victory.

Buckley finishes the semester averaging 21.7 points a game. He ranks second in Quebec and sixth in the CIS.

The Stingers will head to California in late December for the annual San Diego Surf ‘N Slam tournament. They return home to open the second half of the season with back-to-back games versus the McGill Redmen Jan. 16-17.
