Damian Buckley on target for 1000 points

When the Concordia Stingers return to action this weekend Damian Buckley, the Concordia Stingers star point guard, will be just a few points shy of a major career milestone.

Over four seasons, Buckley has scored 982 points in 54 QSSF regular season games. His career average is 18.2 points a game. This year, he is second in Quebec conference scoring with an average of 21.1 points in 10 games.

“I think it’s a great honor for him,” says Concordia head coach John Dore, “especially doing it in four years and with only 16-game seasons. I think his points average over the years say a lot about the caliber of his play and his consistency.”

Buckley can break the 1,000-point mark when the Stingers and the Laval Rouge et Or play back-to-back games this weekend. Concordia will travel to Ste. Foy to face Laval on Friday and return Saturday to play in front of the hometown fans at Concordia gym.

“I’m not thinking about it,” says Buckley. “I guess it’s an honor, but it doesn’t mean much if we don’t win in Quebec and go to nationals.”

The last Stinger to reach the 1,000-point mark was forward Patrick Perrotte. He scored 19 points versus the Bishop’s Gaiters on Nov. 18, 2006 to earn his 1,000th point. It took him 62 games to reach the milestone. Perrotte finished his university career with 1281 points (16.6 average) in 77 games over five seasons.

Tip off time at Concordia gym is 4 p.m. on Saturday.
