Concordia eliminated at basketball championship

The Concordia Stingers men’s basketball team lost 76-65 to the Dalhousie Tigers in the consolation semifinals at the CIS national championship in Halifax on Saturday afternoon.

The No. 7-seeded Stingers were eliminated from the competition, while the No. 6-seeded Tigers will face the Lakehead Thunderwolves (No. 4 seed) in the consolation final.

“We just didn’t play well,” admitted Concordia head coach John Dore. “We expended a lot of energy and emotion the night before in our quarterfinal versus Carleton. We gave the Ravens everything they could handle.

“Today, the players all tried hard, but we’re young and inexperienced.”

The Stingers lost a hard-fought battle with the powerhouse Ravens by a score of 73-66 in opening round action on Friday night.

Against Dalhousie, fourth-year shooting guard Decee Krah was the most explosive Stinger, picking up 20 points. He was six of 10 from three-point range and seven of 11 from the floor. Second team all-Canadian Kyle Desmarais had 13 points, while rookie Zach Brisebois chipped in with 12 points.

Dalhousie’s Simon Farine led all scorers in the game with 21 points. He also had 10 rebounds.

The Stingers are a young team. All 13 players are eligible to return to action in the 2011-’12 season when a more experienced group will be back to defend its 2011 Quebec championship.

“It was a major accomplishment to get here,” Dore said. “This was a great experience. It bodes well for next year.”
