Tessier, Hinse named Stingers' Athletes of the Year

Rugby player Alex Tessier was named Female Athlete of the Year and hockey player Olivier Hinse earned Male Athlete the Year honors at the annual Concordia Stingers gala awards banquet attended by more than 400 people on April 11 in Montreal.

Alex Tessier is an exceptional secondyear centre from Ste. Clothilde de Horton, Que., who was a star in CIS rugby and who represents Quebec and Canada on the international scene.

She was named the outstanding player in the Quebec conference this season. She was third in scoring in the RSEQ with five tries, 18 converts and three penalty goals for 70 points. She was named the game MVP in three of seven regular season contests this fall.

Tessier was named to the CIS allCanadian team in November - one of only two Quebecers on the 15person honor roll. She won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2014 International University Sports Federation Women's Rugby Sevens Championship in Sao Jose de Campos, Brazil last August. She also represented Canada in international U20 events over the summer. More recently Tessier has been representing Canada in international sevens competitions and is in the talent pool under consideration for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.

Olivier Hinse is one of the most prolific goal scorers in the country, tying for the OUA lead and finishing second in the CIS with 18 goals in 26 league games. Four of those markers came shorthanded, the most by any player in the nation. He also added 13 assists to finish 10th in OUA scoring with 31 points

The thirdyear centre from Sherbrooke, Que., was named to the OUA East first allstar team. He was the OUA nominee and eventual winner of the CIS's Dr. Randy Gregg Award presented annually to the hockey player who best combines athletics, academics and community involvement. It is the first time in Concordia men's hockey history that a member of the Stingers earns this prestigious national award. It is only the second time a player from a Quebecbased university is the recipient.

Hinse was named an assistant captain for the 201213 season, becoming the youngest player in school history to earn an A on his sweater, and was named the Stingers captain for the 201415 campaign.
