Women's soccer adds 5 more recruits

Head coach Jorge Sanchez is pleased to announce five new commitments to the 2015 Concordia Stingers women’s soccer program.

Three accomplished mid-fielders will join the team at training camp this summer. Shannon McFadden from Kensington, P.E.I., Emma Scullion from Ottawa and Claudia Waddingham, who is originally from Pointe Claire, Que. but has been living in Rye, N.H. for several years.

McFadden has represented both P.E.I. and New Brunswick with provincial teams and was a member of Team P.E.I. at the 2013 Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Que. She has been invited to train at a National Training Centre camp in Halifax and currently competes with the Fundy High Performance Soccer Academy.

"Shannon is a technically skilled midfielder with a great passing range and the ability to move the ball around the field,” said Sanchez.

Scullion plays club soccer with the Gloucester Hornets and attends St. Matthew Catholic High School. She is a very successful multi-sport athlete having won school championships in both basketball and touch football.

"Emma brings good attacking sense from wide positions and will add depth to our midfield,” Sanchez said.

Waddingham had an exceptional soccer career at Portsmouth High School and has received all-state recognition in each of her four years. She also plays with the prestigious Seacoast United Soccer Club and was part of the New Hampshire Olympic Development Program. A versatile athlete, she competes in track and is the top seeded tennis player at her high school.

"Claudia will bring a great soccer IQ and has the ability to play many roles on the field,” Sanchez said. She is a great passer and has the ability to get the ball forward quickly.”

Sanchez will also welcome two young goalkeepers from Dawson College to training camp – Michelle Garcia of Rosemere, Que. and Olivia Desgroseilliers from Chambly, Que.

Garcia played AAA soccer with FC Broisbriand and was invited to train with the Quebec provincial team. She received a scholarship offer to study and play at University of Maine, Fort Kent, but chose to stay in Quebec.

Desgroseilliers played AAA soccer with Celtix de St. Jean and St. Hubert where she was named her region’s top female espoir athlete in 2010. She was a member of the provincial team from 2010 to 2012 winning three medals (silver in 2010 and gold 2011 and 2012).

"I am excited to have been able to recruit both Michelle and Olivia to Concordia,” Sanchez said. “Their presence will solidify the goalie position for the next few years. They bring different skills to the position but both have great work ethic and determination."
