Stingers to receive 7 FAEQ recruitment bursaries

Seven incoming Stinger athletes will receive recruitment bursaries from the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence (FAEQ), a record number for Concordia University.

This year 39 athletes pursuing their studies at Quebec-based universities will benefit from a total of $179,000 in bursaries from the FAEQ. Thirty-four Quebec natives were selected based on their achievements during their collegiate careers and the impact they are projected to have on the university sports scene. In addition five top athletes from outside the province who have elected to study and compete in Quebec will be rewarded.

The top recipient who has committed to the Stingers is men’s basketball player Ahmadu Tijani (TJ) Umar. The Lachine, Que. native who was an RSEQ all-star at Champlain College, St. Lambert, will receive $8000.

Men’s rugby player Charles Debove, a Vanier College graduate who has national team experience, and wrestler Francis Carter, also from Vanier, will receive $4000 each.

A couple of incoming women’s hockey players will be the recipients of $3000 each. Claudia Dubois from Cégep Limoilou and Sophie Gagnon from Champlain College, Lennoxville, will be recognized for their exceptional college careers.

Two Concordia athletes from out of the province will receive $3000 each. Team Canada running back Myles Browne from Notre Dame High School in Calgary and women’s wrestler Jade Dufour, a Windsor, Ont. native who has an impressive international résumé, have been deemed worthy by the FAEQ.

The FAEQ, whose mission is to support student-athletes in their pursuit of athletic and academic excellence and to promote them as role models in Quebec society, will honour these athletes at a gala awards dinner in November.
