Star forward Schneiders Suffrard commits to Stingers basketball

Head coach Rastko Popovic is pleased to announce Schneiders Suffrard, an exceptionally talented all-star forward from Vanier College, will play for the Concordia Stingers this season.

Having weighed several offers, the six-foot-five Suffrard signed a CIS Letter of Intent committing to the Stingers late Sunday.

"I want to be part of the new legacy and in my opinion Concordia is the best place to accomplish my academic and athletic objectives," said Suffrard who is interested in pursuing a career in Computer Studies.

In 2014-15, he played 18 games with the Vanier Cheetahs averaging 16.6 points and 7.8 rebounds a game. His exceptional play earned him a place on the RSEQ first all-star team.

Many basketball pundits consider Suffrard one of the best prospects available this year. He earns high marks for his versatility, athleticism and strength. He was physically dominant offensively and defensively in the Cégep conference last season.

“We are thrilled to have an athlete of Schneiders’ caliber join the Stingers,” said Popovic. “He is the type of individual you need to build a winning tradition. To have an impact player like him commit sends a serious message. Our goal is to challenge the top teams in the CIS and we are going in the right direction. Schneiders is going to be a leader in this new generation of Concordia basketball.”

Schneiders joins forwards TJ Umar and Jean-Daniel Mathieu in Popovic’s 2015 recruiting class. Together they are laying down a solid foundation for the future and are going to bring some excitement to Quebec university basketball.

“What people are going to see is a very talented group of players from the Quebec Cégep league united and representing Concordia the next five years,” Popovic said. “It’s going to be exciting times for Quebec basketball fans.”

Your first chance to see the new Stingers is Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. when Concordia hosts Murray State, an NCAA Division 1 school.
