Marc-André Element named interim men's hockey coach

Concordia University Director of Recreation and Athletics Patrick Boivin is pleased to announce former team captain Marc-André Element has agreed to serve as interim head coach of the Stingers men's hockey team for the 2015-16 season.

"I'm very excited to have Marc-André behind the bench in this transition year," Boivin said. "You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone more passionate about Stingers hockey than Marc-André. He was a hard-working athlete and an exceptional leader when he played here and brings those qualities to this next challenge as head coach.

"Having been involved with the program in recent years in both coaching and recruiting, Marc-André knows the team very well and will waste no time ensuring the program is operational and competitive, and players are accountable on and off the ice."

Element, originally from Cadillac, Que., was a feisty right wing for five seasons with the Stingers (2006-11). He was an assistant captain in 2008-09 and the captain his last two years. He received multiple honors during his career including the Concordia Ron Lapointe Award for leadership, community service and athletic accomplishment, and a Guy Lafleur Award of Merit, also in recognition of his leadership and hockey prowess.

Since he graduated with a BA, major in Human Relations in 2011, Element has been very involved in coaching. He was an assistant coach with the Stingers in 2011-12, 2012-13 and a portion of 2014-15 before accepting the position of head coach with the Lachine Maroons in the Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League.

Element also worked as an assistant with the midget AAA Châteauguay Grenadiers in 2013-14. The Grenadiers won the Quebec league title and went on to win a silver medal at the Telus Cup midget AAA national championship.Now Element is thrilled to have the opportunity to help out his old team.

"I'm really excited about this new challenge," he said. "Concordia means a lot to me. It's been a big part of my life. I met my wife here. It's really home to me.

"I'm honored to be part of this new era at Concordia. I will bring my passion to the rink everyday and fans can expect to see a well-prepared, disciplined team with a strong work ethic."

Element and his wife Melissa have a young son, Winston. The family makes its home in Kirkland, Que.
