Football camp update with head coach Mickey Donovan

Concordia Stingers head coach Mickey Donovan shares his thoughts, and a few facts about football training camp after four days of on-field practices.

• The Stingers have completed six on-field workouts in four days. All the practices have taken place in heat (30 C plus) and high humidity.

• The coaching staff has reduced the number of players in camp significantly. There are 106 athletes still with the team. Donovan plans to keep approximately 100.

• Donovan says the following offensive players have impressed him so far - second-year running back Simon Chang who came to camp well prepared, veteran receiver Daniel Skube who is in the best shape of his career and rookie receiver Justin Julien who is doing a good job.

• On defence, coach singled out the work of third-year defensive tackle Sam Narkaj, fourth-year safety Mike Charland and second-year linebacker Jeremy Pelletier.

• Pelletier missed time in camp today to attend an event put on by the Montreal Alouettes. He received a bursary from the Als in recognition of his academic and athletic success.

• The most intense competition in camp remains at the quarterback position. Quaid Johnson, Colin Sequeira, Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren and Trenton Miller. “They are all showing some good things,” Donovan said.

• The second biggest battle is at receiver. “We’re so stacked at receiver, it’s crazy,” Donovan said.

• Finally, coach is looking forward to the preseason game versus the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Concordia Stadium. “It will be a great chance for us to evaluate our talent,” he said. “We will dress about 80 players for the game.”
