Head coach Mickey Donovan and the Concordia Stingers football team will host the Queen’s Gaels in preseason action this Sunday at 2 p.m.
Donovan and his staff will use the game to evaluate talent and see who rises up to the challenge, especially at a couple of key positions where the battles have been intense. Following the quarterbacks and the receivers will be among the highlights on Sunday.
Concordia will have 82 players on the game lineup. Here’s the breakdown:
• 45 players who are in their first season with the Stingers
• 20 players who are in their second season
• 39 players on offence, 39 on defence, 4 on special teams• 18 receivers (22 per cent of the lineup)
• 4 quarterbacks
• 52 players who are from Quebec (63 per cent)
• 7 Americans
• 1 each from Australia, Mexico and France
• 1 from Yellowknife, N.W.T.
Concordia and Queen’s met last Aug. 24 in Kingston, Ont. in a preseason contest. The Stingers won 25-18. It was Donovan’s first win as a head coach in the CIS.
In the 2014 game, Concordia had 23 first downs and 351 yards of offence, including 241 yards rushing.
Queen’s collected 23 first downs and 462 yards, but took 137 yards in penalties and turned over the ball five times.
Queen’s Pat Sheahan was the head coach at Concordia from 1989 through 1999. He had a 53-42-1 win-loss-tie record in conference and playoff games.
The Gaels and Stingers have met three times since Sheahan left Montreal. Concordia has won all three contests.The game will take place at Concordia Stadium, 7200 Sherbrooke St. W. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students/seniors.
