8 medals for wrestlers at Concordia tournament

The Concordia wrestling team started the university season with an exceptionally strong showing at its home tournament yesterday.

Eight Stingers earned medals, and both the men’s and women’s teams placed first in the university division of the competition.

On the women’s side, newcomer Jade Dufour won a gold medal in the 48 kg weight class. Veteran wrestler Linda Morais won the 63 kg category. Geneviève Lamarche (72 kg) and Theresa El-Lati (82 kg) were silver medallists.

Concordia had 25 points to beat out York University with 10 points. Thirteen different university, clubs and international groups competed in the women’s competition at the tournament. Concordia finished second in the overall standings. The Brock Wrestling Club was first.

On the men’s side, Vince De Marinis was a gold medallist at 65 kilos. There were three bronze medal performances as well: Bassell Bou Moughlabay (54 kg) Trevor Banks (57 kg) and Dima Gershanov (76 kg).

The Stingers finished with 22 points for first place on the university side, ahead of McMaster University which had 15 points. Concordia finished fourth overall out of 16 groups who competed in the open categories. The Brock Wrestling Club was first once again.
