Matt Halbgewachs is Stingers No. 1 football recruit

The Concordia football program is thrilled to announce offensive lineman Matthew Halbgewachs of the Regina Thunder has signed a Letter of Intent committing to the Stingers.

“He is the No. 1 recruit for us,” said offensive co-ordinator Matt Connell of his six-foot-five, 305-pound tackle. “He will have an immediate impact on our team and on the RSEQ conference.

“It’s like Christmas came early for us. Guys like him come around once in a decade.”

As a member of the Thunder in 2015, Halbgewachs was a Prairie Football Conference all-star and its outstanding lineman. He was also a Canadian Junior Football League all-Canadian. In 2013, he won a national championship with Regina.

In addition to his size and skills, Halbgewachs, 21, has had great coaching. He was on the Saskatchewan Roughriders practice roster in 2015. He spent his days with the CFL team and then joined the Thunder in the evenings.

“I’m all about technique and I’m super competitive,” he said. “I don’t like to lose games, never mind losing one play.“Concordia is a perfect fit for me. I looked at a lot of schools, talked to a lot of schools and researched a lot of schools before deciding to come here. I want to play in a competitive environment and I want to win. I’m here to do everything I can to keep (quarterback) Trenton Miller standing.”

Connell knows his star recruit is going to attract a lot of attention from the professional football scouts over the next couple of years.

“In two years, he will get NFL looks. He’s that good.”

Halbgewachs, a Regina native who graduated from Winston Knoll Collegiate, is also an exceptional student and will study in Concordia’s John Molson School of Business.
