Basketball, hockey Stingers going pink this weekend

Four Concordia teams will battle their crosstown rivals from McGill University in the Stingers Shoot for the Cure weekend, beginning with the popular Corey Cup men’s hockey showdown on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The fundraising event for the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation continues Saturday with a basketball doubleheader at 2 p.m. and a women’s hockey clash at 2:30 p.m.

The Shoot for the Cure initiative began nine years ago when the CIS Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) launched the fundraiser. Since then all 47 basketball schools have adopted the campaign and many have support from multiple teams at their universities.

Since its inception the Shoot for the Cure campaign has proven an overwhelming success with approximately $886,000 in donations.

At the 2015 CIS championship in Quebec City last March, the WBCA presented a cheque for $102,312.05 to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. An additional $23,049.71 was amassed by universities who elected to donate their funds raised to local or provincial organizations bringing the overall total for the 2014-15 season to $125,361.76.

The Stingers make their donations to the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.

This year everyone is encouraged to donate at the games and pick up their pink ribbons. There will be raffles, as well as cupcakes and pink T-shirts on sale. A portion of the money raised from hotdog sales will also be added to the pot.

You can support the cause by attending any of the following events:
