Hockey Stingers conquer McGill in Corey Cup showdown

The Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team took down the McGill Redmen by a score of 4-2 in a thriller on Friday night at the Ed Meagher Arena.

The victory gave the Stingers the Corey Cup and bragging rights over their crosstown rivals. The rivalry game for university hockey supremacy in Montreal has been played 29 times with Concordia winning 10 of them.

Four different forwards scored for the Stingers: Julien Rainville-Avon, Raphael Lafontaine, Jessyko Bernard and Alex Soumakis with the empty-netter.

Concordia rookie goaltender Miguel Sullivan made 25 saves, including one on a penalty shot, to help his team upset No. 6-ranked McGill.

With the win coming on the last day of the regular season for the Stingers, final standings and playoff matchups were decided. Seventh-place Concordia (10-12-6) and McGill will meet in the opening round of the OUA playoffs

The Redmen, who finished in second place in the OUA East with a 21-6-1 record, will host Game 1 on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Game 2 will be at Concordia on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, will be back at McGill on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 5 p.m.
