Stingers 2016 football schedule unveiled

The Concordia Stingers football team will start the 2016 season with a bang.

The Stingers will cross the city to tackle the McGill Redmen, their long-time rivals, in the RSEQ season-opener on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.

Adding to the intensity, the game will be the annual Shaughnessy Cup, good for bragging rights between the two schools. The inaugural game was played in 1969 between McGill and Loyola College.

“We’re ready, we can’t wait to get going,” said Stinger head coach Mickey Donovan. “Having the schedule announced today makes it even more exciting. I wish it was already Sept. 2.”

The Stingers will return to N.D.G. and Concordia stadium for their home-opener on Saturday, Sept. 10 vs. the Laval Rouge et Or.

It will be the first time Laval has played a game at Concordia since Oct. 27, 2012. Including playoffs, the Stingers have played the Rouge et Or on the road five consecutive times.

At TV’s request, kickoff is set for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast by TVA Sports.

“It’s going to be great to host them on our field,” Donovan said. “I’ve been here two full years and that hasn’t happened yet. We have players going into their fourth year who haven’t played Laval at home. It will be pretty meaningful for our players and exciting for our fans.”

Other highlights include the homecoming game on Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. versus the St. Francis Xavier X-men and another home TV game on Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. when McGill is the opponent.

The date and opponent for the annual Shrine Bowl will be announced shortly.
