Powerful Badgers dump Stingers in basketball tournament final

The Concordia Stingers men’s basketball team rolled through two opponents before hitting a hot Brock Badgers team in the championship of the Concordia Classic tournament on the weekend.

The Badgers, a perennial CIS powerhouse, defeated the Stingers 95-78. Brock wrapped up the tournament with a 3-0 win-loss record, while Concordia went 2-1.

Brock’s’ Dani Elgadi was the MVP of the tournament. He scored 36 points in the final. Teammates Daniel Cayer and Ryan Bennett were named to the tournament all-star team.

The Stingers had some exceptional performers as well. Veteran Ken Beaulieu and rookie Olivier Simon were named to the tournament honour roll.

Concordia defeated the Nipissing Lakers 81-68 in the opening game last Friday. Mike Fosu with 18 points and Beaulieu with 17 points were the leading scorers. On Saturday, the Stingers beat the Cape Breton Capers 75-53. Simon led the way with 14 points.

The Stingers still have nine preseason games ahead of them, starting with the UPEI Panther tournament this weekend in the Maritimes. They return home to host the McMaster Marauders on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.
