Basketball tips off Shoot for the Cure events

Be sure to join the Concordia men’s and women’s basketball teams tonight as they tip off the Stingers’ Shoot for the Cure fundraising weekend with a doubleheader against McGill University.

Over three days, four Concordia varsity teams will battle their crosstown rivals from McGill in the Stingers’ annual fundraiser.

The event for the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation continues Friday at 7:30 p.m. with the Corey Cup, the annual battle for men’s university hockey supremacy in Montreal. The Stingers are the defending champions. At this event only, the first 50 Concordia students to attend the game will receive a free rivalry T-shirt.

The final event is Saturday at 3 p.m. when the women’s hockey team clashes with the McGill Martlets. Stinger assistant coach Caroline Ouellette will accompany her aunt, Claire Ouellette, to centre ice for a ceremonial puck drop. The Stingers are honoured to have Claire, a breast cancer survivor, join them at the game.

The Shoot for the Cure initiative began 10 years ago when the U Sports Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) launched the fundraiser. Since then all 47 basketball schools have adopted the campaign and many have support from multiple teams at their universities.

Since its inception the Shoot for the Cure campaign has proven an overwhelming success with approximately about $1 million in donations.

This year everyone is encouraged to donate at the games and pick up their pink ribbons. There will be raffles, as well as cupcakes and more.

You can support the cause by attending any of the following events:

  • Basketball doubleheader vs. McGill – Thursday at 6 p.m. (women’s game) and 8 p.m. (men’s game).
  • Corey Cup, men’s hockey vs. McGill Redmen – Friday at 7:30 p.m.
  • Women’s hockey vs. McGill – Saturday at 3 p.m.

All games will be played at the Concordia athletic complex, 7200 Sherbrooke St. W. in N.D.G.
