Big sweep over McGill for Stinger basketball teams

The Concordia Stingers basketball teams swept McGill before a boisterous full house at Concordia gym tonight to open Shoot for the Cure weekend.

The women’s team won 69-65 breaking a 10-game losing streak at the hands of the Martlets. The last Concordia win was Feb. 22, 2014.

Veteran Stinger Richelle Gregoire led all scorers in the game with 23 points. Rookie guard Caroline Task chipped in with 15 points. McGill’s Marie-Love Michel impressed with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

The Stingers’ men’s team up-ended the No. 7-ranked Redmen 66-56. The victory avenged a 96-56 loss from earlier in the season. Concordia head coach Rastko Popovic thought the humiliating loss served as motivation for his team.

“We came out with great energy and competed, especially on the defensive end,” he said. “I thought the atmosphere in the gym was fantastic. We were inspired by the noise level and crowd involvement in the game. I thought our team really fed off it.”

All-star forward Ken Beaulieu led the Stingers with 15 points and six rebounds. TJ Umar was good for 14 points and Ricardo Monge had 12. The leading scorer in the game was the Redmen’s Dele Ogundokun with 18 points.

Concordia and McGill meet again on Saturday on the other side of town. The women’s game gets under way at 2 p.m. and the men tip off at 4 p.m.
