Fifth-year Stinger captain and fan favorite Olivier Hinse has signed a contract to play professional hockey with the Aalborg Pirates of Denmark’s elite hockey league.
“It’s going to be amazing,” said Hinse who always hoped to play hockey in Europe after graduating. “It’s a great place to play and the team looks good. Aalborg finished in first place last season. I think it’s a great opportunity for me.”
Aalborg plays in the top Danish ice hockey league, Metal Ligaen, and is coached by former Vancouver Canuck Brandon Reid, who is a native of Kirkland, Que.
Hinse leaves Concordia as one of the most accomplished players in the history of the men’s hockey program. He is a four-time OUA all-star, twice represented U SPORTS in games versus the national junior team and was the captain of Canada’s entry at the 28th Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan last January. He also won the prestigious Randy Gregg Award as the Canadian university hockey player who best combines athletics, academics and community engagement.
Originally from Sherbrooke, Que., Hinse will report to training camp in early August.
