5 games slated for Shoot for the Cure weekend

Be sure to join the Concordia hockey and basketball teams this weekend as they take on their crosstown rivals from McGill University and run their annual Shoot for the Cure fundraiser.

The two-day extravaganza which features a series of initiatives to help raise money for the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation begins Friday at 7:30 p.m. with the 31st annual Corey Cup, the yearly battle for men’s university hockey supremacy in Montreal.

The event ramps up the following day with a basketball doubleheader tipping off with the Stingers-Martlets game at 2 p.m. The men’s game will follow at 4 p.m.

Also on Saturday the Concordia women’s hockey team takes on McGill at 3 p.m. The Stingers have invited two strong, inspirational women to join them at the game and to take part in a ceremonial faceoff. The players and coaches are honoured to have Collette Cyr and Kelli McLellan join them. Collette is a breast cancer survivor and the mother of Stinger hockey player Brigitte Laganiere. Kelli is currently fighting cancer and is the mother of McGill’s Olivia Atkinson.

The last event of the day is another Concordia men’s hockey game. This time the Carleton Ravens will be the opponents. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Everyone is encouraged to donate at the games and pick up their pink ribbons. There will be raffles, as well as cupcakes and T-shirts on sale.

The Shoot for the Cure initiative began more than10 years ago when the U SPORTS Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) launched the fundraiser. Since then all 47 basketball schools have adopted the campaign and many have support from multiple teams at their universities.

Since its inception the U SPORTS Shoot for the Cure campaign has been an overwhelming success with approximately about $1 million in donations.

  • Corey Cup, men’s hockey vs. McGill – Friday at 7:30 p.m.
  • Women’s hockey vs. McGill – Saturday at 3 p.m.
