Phil Hudon delivers win in opening round of playoffs

Captain Phil Hudon scored at 5:08 of overtime to give the Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team a 3-2 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks at the Ed Meagher Arena on Friday night and to wrap up the OUA East quarterfinals series in two straight games.

Stinger Raphael Lafontaine open the scoring at 9:05 of the first period. Rookie defenceman Carl Neill stretched the Concordia lead to 2-0 at 4:12 of the second stanza.

UOIT fought back with goals from Mike Robinson late in the second period and Jack Patterson who scored with 2:36 left in regulation, forcing the overtime period.

The Stingers won the opening game of the best-of-three-series in Oshawa, Ont. last Wednesday. Massimo Carozza scored two goals to help deliver a 4-1 victory.

This is the second straight year that Concordia met and eliminated UOIT in the first round of the playoffs.

The OUA East semifinals begin on Wednesday with the Stingers visiting the Queen’s Gaels. Concordia also met Queen’s in round two last season. The Gaels took the series in three games.

Details surrounding the best-of-three series are still under review. Updates will be posted shortly.
