Veronica Keefe golden at Francophonie Games

Led by gold medallist Veronica Keefe, five members of the Concordia Stingers wrestling team made it to the podium at the Francophonie Games in Nice, France last week.

Keefe finished first in the 72-kilo weight class. Jordan Steen (84 kg) and Linda Morais (63 kg) were silver medallists. Finishing in third place were Scott Schiller (66 kg) and Jake Renning (55 kg).

Martine Dugrenier and David Zilberman, two former Stingers and Olympians, coached the Quebec Francophonie Games wrestling team.

As the only gold medalist for Quebec at the event, Keefe served at the flag-bearer at the closing ceremonies.

The Games are a combination of artistic and sporting events for the Francophonie, mostly French-speaking nations, and have been held every four years since 1989.

The competition is open to athletes and artists from the 55 member nations, three associate member nations and 12 observer nations of the Francophonie. Canada is represented by three teams: Quebec, New Brunswick and another team representing the rest of the country.

The wrestlers now move their focus to preparations for the annual Concordia Invitational Wrestling Tournament that will be held on Sunday, Oct. 27.
