Stingers host McGill in RSEQ women's rugby final

The Concordia Stingers women’s rugby team is looking to secure its fourth Quebec university title in the last five years when it hosts the McGill Martlets in the RSEQ championship Friday at 7 p.m.

It won’t be an easy challenge as the teams have both been performing well. And in the only meeting this season (Sept. 18), Concordia eked out a narrow 17-15 victory.

“We match up really well,” said Concordia head coach Graeme McGravie. “The game will definitely be our pack versus their backs. Two good teams in a championship game, we’re probably talking about a defensive game.”

The Stingers are currently ranked No. 4 in the CIS. Concordia was undefeated in the regular season and defeated the Laval Rouge et Or 38-3 in semifinal action last week.

The Martlets are the sixth-ranked team in CIS with a 6-1 win-loss record. They won their semifinal game 27-17 over the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

“The team is confident,” McGravie said. “The players are more confident than the coaches. We’re all nervous wrecks, but the players are confident which is nice to see.”

After the game, the Quebec conference all-stars and major award winners will be given out. The Christine Regimbal Trophy and the RSEQ banner will be presented to the winning team.

Concordia Stadium is located at 7200 Sherbrooke St. W. Tickets are $5 for the championship. Children 12 years of age and under are admitted free of charge.

A men’s game between Concordia and McGill will follow at 9:30 p.m. Both games will be webcast on GameCentral. You can pick up the link at stingers.ca.
