Cross-town rivals to battle in men's hockey playoffs

For the first time since 2007 the Concordia Stingers will clash with their cross-town rivals, the McGill Redmen, in OUA men’s hockey playoff action.

The teams will play a best-of-three series in the opening round, beginning Wednesday at 7 p.m. at McGill.

Game 2 will take place at Concordia’s Ed Meagher Arena on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door. No passes will be accepted for this event.

Game three, if necessary, will be back at McGill on Sunday at 7 p.m.

In 2007, the hard-fought series was captured by the Redmen in Game 3. The Stingers forced the deciding game with an exciting come-from-behind 6-5 overtime victory.

In the 2013-14 season the teams met three times, including a preseason game, with McGill taking all three. Two of the three games were decided by two goals.

The Redmen finished in third place in the OUA East with a 21-5-2 win-loss-overtime loss record. The Stingers wrapped up the season in sixth place with a 10-13-4 record.

A key player to watch for on the Stingers is forward Olivier Hinse. In 27 games this season he has 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points. He picked up goals in both regular season meetings between the teams.

The entire sports weekend at Concordia features games versus McGill. The basketball teams play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. at Concordia gym. On Sunday, the women’s hockey team hosts the Martlets in Game 2 of the RSEQ best-of-three semifinal series. The puck drops at 3 p.m.
