Stingers bolster roster with some local soccer talent

Head coach Jorge Sanchez is pleased to announce three local players have signed CIS Letters of Intent and will join the Stingers women’s soccer team at training camp in August.

All three athletes should compete for playing time and will push veteran players during the RSEQ conference’s outdoor season this fall.

Laurence Thivierge comes out of Collège Lionel Groulx and also recently played with Fabrose in the LSEQ Senior 2nd division. The Laval, Que. native played two seasons at the college level, picking up two goals in 20 games.

“She can play defensive midfielder or centre back,” said Sanchez. “She brings a combination of good size, technical ability and tactical understanding.”

Elisa Spadafino is a product of the Laval Conquerants soccer club and also recently played with St. Michel and John Abbott College where she competed for two seasons.

“She is a very versatile player who will be able to slot in at all the positions across the back line,” Sanchez said of the Laval, Que. resident. “She brings good speed and stamina and is very technically sound.”

Rebecca Bensimon from Dollard des Ormeaux, Que. will compete for time as a goalkeeper. She played three seasons at John Abbott College and also represented the Dorval Soccer Club.

“She will add depth to our goalie position,” Sanchez said. “She is a quality shot blocker who is comfortable playing with her feet out of the back and has proven leadership to help position her backline.”

The Stingers’ training camp will start in mid-August and the regular season gets under way the first weekend in September.
