Stingers' Alex Tessier off to Brazil for rugby

Alex Tessier, the outstanding rookie on the Concordia Stingers women’s rugby team last fall, has been named to Canada’s roster for the 2014 World University Rugby Sevens Championship in Sao Jose de Campos, Brazil this summer.

A centre from Ste. Clothilde de Horton, Que., Tessier came to Concordia out of the very strong Dawson College rugby program and also the Quebec provincial team program.

In 2013, she stepped up and established herself as a top player in the RSEQ university conference. In seven games, she scored six tries to lead the Stingers in scoring. She was also selected as the game MVP on two occasions. She was the Quebec conference Rookie of the Year and Concordia’s Female Rookie of the Year.

Joining Tessier will be scrum half Bianca Farella, who suited up for the Stingers in 2012 before moving to Victoria to train full time with Canada’s national team.

The World University Championship will be held Aug. 8-10. It is the premier Rugby Sevens event for athletes who are currently registered in University or have graduated in the preceding year. For Rugby Canada, the event is regarded as a feeder and development opportunity for athletes looking to make their way into national programs.
