Donovan, Stingers collect first win of football season

In his first game as head coach of the Concordia Stingers Mickey Donovan earned a victory with a 25-18 win over the Queen's Gaels in preseason action at Richardson Stadium in Kingston, Ont. this afternoon.

Donovan's defensive backs stepped up to help secure the win. They hauled in three interceptions, taking two back for touchdowns.

Second-year man Mike Asare hauled in a ball and ran 21 yards to the end zone at 10:31 of the second quarter.

All-Canadian returner Kris Robertson showed off his skills by taking an errant pass back 42 yards for a major with 9:45 left to play.

Robertson's score helped the Stingers recover from a shaky third quarter that saw them give up a halftime lead.

“Nobody got down,” explained Asare. “Everyone stayed positive and kept pushing. The coaches prepped us to stay strong and together.”

Concordia's other points came on a one-yard TD plunge by rookie quarterback Colin Sequeira who had the most playing time out of the three pivots who got in the game.

Kicker Keegan Treolar was good for a single, a 22-yard field goal and three converts.

Overall, Concordia rolled up 25 first downs and 351 yards of offence. Rookie running back Gunner Tatum was a big factor in moving the team down the field. He carried the ball 15 times for 98 yards.

Queen's had 18 first downs and 462 yards of offence.

The Stingers kickoff the Quebec conference season on Sept. 6 when they host the Bishop's Gaiters at Concordia Stadium at 1 p.m.
