Stingers shine at annual wrestling showcase

Four of five Stinger athletes collected medals at the annual Concordia Invitational Wrestling tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Loyola campus athletic complex.

Veronica Keefe, a fifth-year competitor, won the 80 kilos weight class. Rookie Theresa El Lati was third at 72 kg and second-year wrestler Genevieve Lamarche finished in fifth place.

The Concordia women finished second in the university competition with 10 points.

On the men’s side, two members of the Stingers wrestling team won gold medals – fourth-year wrestler Trevor Banks at 54 kilos and Vince De Marinis, in his second year with the program, at 68 kilos.

The Concordia men’s team finished tied in first place of the university competition with the McMaster Mauraders. Both teams had 20 points.

Overall, more than 100 wrestlers from clubs and universities across Canada compete in the tournament. A few international competitors also took part coming from as far away as Brazil and Italy.
